Custom made Plexiglas red tint and blue tint from Allplastics were selected for the “Gates of light” project designed by artist Khaled Sabsabi and commissioned by the Department of “Urban Growth” NSW for their site in Campbelltown.
The result was a spectacular display of constellations which were lasercut from 10 mm sheets specifically to suit the artist’s unique designs and colour combinations.
The Plexiglas shapes were installed in steel structures fabricated by QME (Quality Manufacturing Engineers).
Gates of Light:
The concept is inspired by ancient city gates, constellations, ancient and modern astronomy, light, colour and design. City gates were traditionally built to provide a point of access, entry and departure for people. City gates can be found across the world in cities dating back to ancient times and depending on their historical context filled functions relating to security, health and trade. For the artist in this context, the Gates of Light represent prosperity.
Constellations:
Humans since the dawn of time have been fascinated by the stars they live under. Cultures have used and continue today to use the stars and astronomical forms to expand their learning. There are 88 constellations, 36 lie mainly in the northern sky, and the other 52 predominantly in the southern sky. Commonly known constellation patterns represent people, animals, objects and mythological stories and are used to inspire worship, art and science. For the artist this work is a expression on how multiple cultures have influenced, incorporated and evolved knowledge and the science of astronomy in a collective like manner, which mirrors contemporary Australian society as well as the great Renaissance period where art, philosophy, politics, science and religion flourished.
Lighting was organised by the client (Urban Growth NSW) which gives the public art a unique look at night.
