Redback Racing is the University of New South Wales Formula SAE Team. Each year, the team designs and manufactures an opened-wheeled formula racing car for entry into the Formula SAE-Australasia Competition. Typically UNSW Redback Racing consists of around 40 undergraduate students from a range of degrees who are involved in all aspects of the build. The project allows students to apply their curricular teachings within the university in a fast-paced, practical and exciting environment.
The team bases their design around an Aluminium-Honeycomb composite panel, known as monocoque chassis. This innovative and unique approach makes the UNSW Redback Racing Team one of a handful of teams worldwide to manufacture a vehicle using these methods. This monocoque is constructed by routing the required designs out of full panels before folding and bonding them into the required shapes. The team is thus equipped with a resultant chassis that is stiffer, lighter and easier to manufacture. To top it all of, it is cheaper than other conventional approaches.
For some years, UNSW Redback Racing has relied on Allplastics Engineering to route their panels. The CNC Routing Machines that the company uses are ideal for this application and produce a high quality product for the team to use in their build”, Redback Racing Team Member, Nidhiroy Singh, commented.
Allplastics Engineering specialises in the machining, CNC Routing and Fabrication of architectural, building and engineering plastics. In addition, it stocks a range of composite panels such as PEP Core and AIRBOARD Translucent decorative panels, as well as Aluminium Composite panels.
