Allplastics recently supplied a childcare centre on the northern suburbs of Sydney with clear polycarbonate panels which segregated the centre from the neighbourhood.
UV resistant polycarbonate in 9.5mm thickness was chosen due to its toughness – which is 250 times stronger than glass – making it hail-proof and safeguarded against objects that may be thrown at it, such as toys, rocks or pebbles.
Solid polycarbonate sheets are available in various thicknesses ranging from 3mm thick to 12mm. There is MAR resistant or AR2 (protection on both sides) polycarbonate available for table-top use, as this application requires regular wiping and having objects rubbing against it.
Other advantages of using polycarbonate are its light weight compared to glass, which also saves on the budget amount on the support system it requires to fix it into place.
Polycarbonate is also a self-extinguishing material, which makes it a better alternative than acrylic.
